Scottish Marine Atlas published in March 2011
Scotland's Marine Atlas was published by the Scottish Government
in March 2011. Following the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 it is
a key step in developing the first national marine plan for all
Scottish marine waters out to 200 nautical miles. It provides an
up-to-date assessment of the current state of Scotland's seas which
will inform the implementation of the Marine strategy Framework
Directive.
The Atlas highlights the richness of Scotland's seas from rare
plants and animals to income generated by marine industries such as
aquaculture and tourism. There are nearly 200 A3 pages of maps
figures and text covering the physical environment, the Clean and
Safe Seas monitoring programme, the Healthy and Biologically
Diverse Seas programme, the Productive Seas programme and Climate
Change. The Atlas brings together for the first time a wide range
of data on the marine environment and the activities that take
place in Scottish seas. It represents a unique evidence base to
help the Scottish Government develop further objectives and inform
marine planning and management. It is easily accessible to a
broad audience and provides them with wealth of information.
